How To Get Back To The Gym

I didn’t go to the gym for about 2 months! For me that is a really long time. Now that I am at Uni and have a gym 5 minutes away from my house, I have no excuses. But not exercising for such a long time made me both lazy and scared as I now doubt my abilities and feel really unfit.

Here are a few things that helped me get back in the gym:

Chose an outfit – planning what to wear makes me really excited to go to the gym. There is something about choosing the pair of trainers and leggings that I really like. Plus when I have to get ready to go it takes me a lot less time.

➭ Make a plan – decide what you want to work on and write down exercises that will help you achieve that. You might have to change your plans slightly when you get to the gym if a machine is not available or something, but having a good idea of what you want to do will keep you from just wondering around and not having a great workout.

➭ Make a playlist – find some new music that makes you happy and energised! Make a great playlist and blast it at the gym! I always sing to myself when I am at the gym…might look a bit strange but it entertains me.

➭ Sign up for classes – have a look at the classes at your gym and sign up for something you think you would like or try something new. I never used to go to gym classes but I have recently fell in love with going as often as possible and I definitely encourage everyone to try it.

➭ Set realistic goals – if you haven’t been to the gym in a while, it is likely that your strength and stamina have gone down. Make sure you address this and don’t have high expectations for your first workout. Go easy on your first workout but still challenge yourself.

➭ Tell someone you are going to the gym – sharing your gym plans with someone will make it more likely for you to actually go to the gym. I do this all the time. I talk to my friends about what I would like to try or work on at the gym. So definitely try to tell someone you are going to the gym, be specific like: “tomorrow I am waking up at 9am to go to the gym”.

➭ Look at your diet – having a good diet always makes me feel more motivated and inspired to go to the gym. A good diet for me involves loads of fruits, veggies and home cooked meals. So definitely try to have a healthy diet, you will feel so much better!

Thank you so much for reading guys! Hope these tips help, if you have any comments or questions please feel free to share them. I am finally more settled into Uni and my course so I will definitely be posting more regularly. Lots of love,

Ines x
